Creators' Vibes Vol. 15: My 6 Step Guide to The Great Reset
After 10+ readers asked 'How exactly do I restart?', I created my personal 6-step blueprint for the great reset.
The Big Vibe
Hello Creative Minds,
Welcome to a new week. I have something massive for you today, so let’s not waste time.
Last week, I wrote about how to reset (if you missed it, read here). That was more of a general guide for anyone looking to start fresh. But over the past seven days, I received several emails, more than ten, asking the same question in different forms: How exactly will I (me writing this) restart?
So yesterday, I sat down and created a roadmap I would personally follow if I had to start all over again. This one is practical and serious. As we say in Naija, “tie your wrapper well.” Let’s go: Here are the six steps I came up with.
1. Learn a high-income skill or high-ticket sales
There are many ways to make money, but the wise thing is to choose a path that separates effort from reward. In other words, ten hours of work shouldn’t always equal ten hours of pay, when you can make ten hours of work equal a whole month’s pay.
The truth? Sometimes you’ll grind for weeks with no result. But once it clicks, the reward can be massive. That’s why high-income skills and high-ticket sales are game changers. They multiply your effort.
In 2022, I join body with a friend of mine to visit a friend of his in Lekki. This friend of his said that for two years, he hadn’t earned a kobo. Just when I thought, “God abeg, wetin man go dey chop,” two weeks later, he closed a real estate sale worth ₦1.1 billion. His commission? ₦110 million. One sale. High-ticket clients are rare, but like the elders say, “one big fish is better than a thousand tadpoles.”
You don’t have to wait for billion-naira deals. Even small high-income skills count. My first million in 2014 came from building websites with WordPress for a TV station in Lagos. Nothing fancy (and please don’t ask how the money vanished).
Think social media management, web dev, digital marketing. Or, if you have time and a laptop, dive into AI, cybersecurity, and machine learning. But remember, “skills are the new oil wells”.
2. Network
Networking is like planting yam. You don’t eat the seed yam; you plant it, water it, and harvest later.
This year alone, 90% of my clients came from referrals. I often wake up to messages like, “Segun, I gave your number to someone,” and business follows. That’s network working while you’re asleep.
In early 2023, I helped a man fix his website for free. He didn’t pay a dime, but a year later, he connected me to a deal that paid me well. If I had insisted on payment upfront, I would have eaten seed yam instead of waiting for harvest.
Yes, some people will take advantage. But there are also genuine ones who will repay you in gold. As the Yoruba say, “the child who washes his hands will eat with elders.” Build trust, give value, stay in touch.
3. Learn from the best
Ten years ago, I wish someone had told me this: “Better than a thousand days of reading is one day with a great teacher.”
A cousin of mine once tried to intern at a fintech company during SIWES. He was rejected. I told him to offer to work for free. They still said no. We then searched LinkedIn for a developer working with the fintech company, who then helped us. Finally, after persistence, they allowed him, but with a waiver that it was he who said he didn’t want to get paid. Those six months of unpaid work helped him get another 1 year of NYSC internship there, still unpaid. Immediately after NYSC, he landed a top job at a Nigerian bank. That was possible because he already has 1.5 years of relevant experience, building real-world solutions.
Lesson? Sometimes you won’t pay with money, but you will pay with time, energy, or comfort. As Igbo people say, “he who follows the wise will himself become wise.” Proximity to excellence is education on its own.
4. Build your audience and make yourself discoverable
Networking is great, but in today’s world, audience is power. Social media is the new marketplace, and the bigger your stall, the more likely people will buy.
Imagine you had 10,000 Instagram followers. Even if only 10 people were interested, and just one person eventually buys, that’s still one paying client. If you had 20,000, trust me, bro, more than 2 people will buy. Growth is often geometric.
That’s the advantage of an audience: it amplifies your voice. Build one, and every idea, product, or service you put out has a higher chance of success. “When the market is full, even the silent hawker will sell.”
5. Take bold steps
Once you have skills, a network, and an audience, fear must not hold you. Attend conferences. Slide into DMs. Target international clients. Join associations. Introduce yourself boldly.
The truth? People buy from those they know and trust. Familiarity breeds credibility. As we say, “the person who says ‘good morning’ often will one day be remembered in the evening.”
6. Build a lifestyle and fit work into it
Finally, don’t let work dictate your life. Instead, decide the kind of life you want and arrange work around it.
Otherwise, you’ll always feel like you’re chasing something. Balance takes time, but if you design your lifestyle first, work becomes more meaningful. “A man who knows where he is going does not get tired of the journey.”
In summary:
Learn a high-income skill.
Build your network.
Stay close to the best.
Grow your audience.
Be bold.
Live on your terms.
As Nigerians say, “the road is long, but with steady steps, the snail reached Noah’s ark.”
Reality Check: Give It Time
In Nigeria, we say, “No matter how fast the goat runs, it can never reach the market before the owner.” Growth has its own timing. You may follow all these steps, learn skills, build a network, grow your audience, and still not see results immediately. Don’t panic. Seeds don’t germinate overnight, but with care, they eventually bring a harvest.
Be patient with the process. Consistency is what separates those who restart and quit halfway from those who restart and rise higher. Remember, even the bamboo tree spends years growing underground before it shoots up sky-high. Your work is not wasted; it’s building roots.
While this is exactly what I will do if I have to restart, from zero, with no previous skill or experience, don’t also forget - Who I be? So please use it with caution.
What I’m Working On
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been putting out vacancies and opportunities. But here’s the surprising thing: I’ve found it hard to reach some of the very people I wanted to reach, or at least know more about, because they don’t have a LinkedIn account.
In today’s world, LinkedIn is not just a job board; it’s your digital handshake. Imagine going to a big networking event in Lagos without a name tag; that’s what it feels like when people can’t find you online.
My advice? If you don’t already have a LinkedIn account, create one this week. Even if you’re still figuring out your career path, put up a simple profile with your skills, experiences, and a decent photo. Opportunities often move faster than we think, and LinkedIn is one of the easiest ways for them to find you.
As the saying goes, “The child that washes his hands will dine with elders.” Position yourself where opportunities can meet you.
Tool of the Week: LinkedIn
Why: Because in 2025, not having a LinkedIn account is like living in Lagos without knowing where Third Mainland Bridge is; you’re missing the main road.
How to gist it: “LinkedIn is where opportunities wear suits and walk around looking for who to favour. If you’re not there, you may be invisible to the very people searching for you.”
Start simple: upload a good photo, write a short bio, and list your skills. Over time, share what you’re learning and the projects you’re proud of. Even if you’re not looking for a job today, let your future employer or client be able to find you tomorrow.
